UK Anti-Doping v Shila Panjavi

Summary

  • Sport: Weightlifting
  • Issue: Arbitration
  • Type: Anti-Doping
  • Tribunal: Charles Hollander QC, Professor Gordon McInnes, Carole Billington-Wood
  • Decision date: 02 March 2017
  • Outcome: 4-year ineligibility

Decision Details

Ms Panjavi, a talented and experienced weightlifter, has been suspended for a period of 4 (four) years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ARDV) pursuant to Article 2.1 of UK Anti-Doping Rules (ADR).

On 12 June 2016, a Doping Control Officer collected an In-Competition urine sample from Ms Panjavi. A World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in London analysed the sample, which tested positive for 3'-Hydroxystanozolol (a metabolite of stanozolol). Stanozolol is a non-specified substance classified under S1.1a of the WADA 2016 Prohibited List for anabolic steroids and is prohibited at all times.

Ms Panjavi, failed to establish that the ARDV was not intentional and as such, the NADP Tribunal of Charles Hollander QC (Chair), Professor Gordon McInnes and Carole Billington-Wood imposed a period of four years’ ineligibility on the athlete.

Ms Panjavi’s provisional suspension commenced on the 8th of July 2016, meaning her period of ineligibility will run until midnight on 7 July 2020.
