IOC establishes International Safeguarding Officer in Sport Certificate

The International Olympic Committee has established the International Safeguarding Officer in Sport Certificate which will create a minimum standard of education and training for safeguarding officers in sport on an international level.

The five month education course is set to begin in September 2021 and once it has been completed and the final examination passed individuals will receive their International Safeguarding Officer in Sport Certificate which shows that they have achieved the required international standard of education and training.

Registration is open to anyone but predominantly targeted at International Federations, National Federations and National Olympic Committees. IOC President Thomas Bach said “The safety and wellbeing of athletes are paramount to the IOC and the Olympic Movement. We need to make every effort to keep athletes safe and to guard their rights. I am pleased that we can today initiate this certificate to enhance awareness and education in this important area of athlete welfare, reinforcing the stance against all forms of harassment and abuse in sport.”

The IOC also announced that 11 additional webinars for National Olympic Committees will be available from October 2020 onwards which will cover a wide range of safeguarding topics.
