Triple gold medallist heptathlete Nafi Thiam in dispute with Belgian Athletics

Days before the World Athletics Championships Tokyo25 heptathlon on 19-20 September, triple gold medallist heptathlete Nafi Thiam is in dispute with Belgian Athletics, accusing the federation of preventing her from joining its pre-camp. Thiam was allegedly told five days before leaving for the championships that she was not allowed to join the pre-camp, impacting her preparation. Thiam also stated that her physiotherapist was not accredited. She has accused the federation of making this choice because she did not sign its code of conduct.
Belgian Athletics’ code of conduct states that athletes at championships must wear official team kit. However, Thiam is sponsored by Nike, whereas the federation has a deal with Asics. Therefore, this causes issues with image rights. Athletes must sign the code of conduct to participate in championships, but the federation allowed Thiam to compete without doing so.
Regarding not signing the code, Thiam voiced: “That was not my choice. We had to find a new solution in Tokyo at the last minute: a training place, a gym, a place to sleep,” according to Belga News Agency.
According to Reuters, Thiam continued: “Five days before departure in a city like Tokyo, that wasn't easy, and then there's the financial aspect. That had a negative impact. I don't understand it, it's very disappointing…
I feel punished, and that's unfair. I’m trying to stay positive and professional and forget about it all, but it's definitely having a negative impact.”
However, Jessica Mayon, president of the Ligue Belge Francophone d’Athlétisme (LBFA), the French-speaking governing body for athletics in Belgium, rejected Thiam’s claims. For example, she stated that Thiam had received financial support.
Mayon stated: "I have written proof that what she says isn't true. It's a lie. She received an email promising that someone from the federation was willing to do anything for her at the training camp. Of course, she was welcome there…
I think it's a shame she's acting this way. Of course, some people were unhappy that she hadn't signed the code of conduct. But she's here at the World Championships, and we've always protected her.”
Belga News Agency also reported that Mayon is willing to discuss the issue with Thiam: “I remain open to discussion, as long as there is respect on both sides. But if commitments are not respected, I have the right to present my version of the facts with evidence.”
Even though Thiam has recently returned from injury, she is still Belgium’s standout contender for a medal. She also stated: “I am here for the championships. I’ve worked hard for this, and I want to perform.”
