Referee to wear body camera in Serie A match

Referee to wear body camera in Serie A match

The referee for the Serie A match between Juventus and Inter Milan will wear a body camera for the first time in the Italian league. Serie A is Italy’s top professional football league, and the Juventus v Inter Milan match will take place on Saturday.

The high-resolution micro-camera will be placed on the referee’s headset. It will be used during warm-ups, during the live match, and during replays. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be able to access the footage, and selected moments will be broadcasted.

The U.S. tested the body cameras during the Club World Cup in July. FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) advocate that the cameras enhance live coverage.

Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the FIFA referees committee, said that body cameras offer viewers a “new experience.”

“We had the possibility to see what the referee sees on the field of play,” Collina told FIFA’s official website in July. “And this was not only for entertainment purposes, but also for coaching the referees (and) to explain why something was not seen on the field of play,” which helps build respect for the referees too.

The Premier League will also reportedly be testing the cameras in the new season. The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has also shown interest in the technology.

Chief Executive of the Italian league, Luigi De Siervo, expressed: “Serie A has always been at the forefront of adopting new technologies, aware of the central role they play in the evolution of television viewing, in promoting our product globally, and in ensuring transparency in refereeing decisions.”
