Rojas to miss long jump at World Championships after wearing incorrect shoes in qualifying

Triple jump world record holder Yulimar Rojas will not be competing in the long jump at this month’s World Championships after her qualification was deemed invalid due to unapproved shoes.

Rojas met the qualifying standard for the long jump in June in Guadalajara but was wearing triple jump shoes which are not allowed in long jump events. World Athletics said “Ms Rojas had intended to compete in the long jump after this event, with approved shoes, to qualify for the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022 but injury prevented this.”

The approved sole thickness for triple jump is 25mm but for the long jump it is only 20mm so Rojas’ shoes were 5mm over the approved limit. Rojas is scheduled to compete in the triple jump at the Championships where she will look to win a third consecutive title.

World Athletics added “We know this is disappointing for Ms. Rojas and her legions of fans, but we very much look forward to watching Ms. Rojas compete in the triple jump in WCH Oregon 2022 and qualifying for both events next year at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 2023.”

The Championships begin in Eugene, Oregon on 15th July.
