Lawsuit filed against UFC White House event

Lawsuit filed against UFC White House event

The Public Integrity Project, a Washington DC based public interest law firm recently founded to combat political and corporate corruption, has filed a lawsuit against the UFC Freedom 250 event scheduled to take place on Sunday, 14 June 2026, on Flag Day and US President Donald Trump’s 80th Birthday, at the White House. The Public Integrity Project is led by the likes of former Senator, Russ Feingold, and politician, Zephyr Teachout.

Brendan Ballou, the organisation’s lead attorney, voiced: “We think that this is a profound misuse of our sacred national monuments for private gain. And we think that needs to be stopped because it breaks the law.”

The organisation argues that it is against Trump and the UFC not applying for a permit to use the space and argues that they should have to consult Congress to approve construction work. ‘The Claw,’ a huge steel arch and lighting structure is being built over a UFC fighting arena on the White House South Lawn. The UFC will reportedly spend around $60m (£44.3m) on the event.

Trump voiced himself that: “We're building something in front of the White House that's quite attractive to a lot of people. And I'm looking at it and maybe we'll never, ever take it down.” The Public Integrity Project also argues an environmental review is required but has not been taken into consideration.

The organisation says that UFC Freedom 250 does “not in any material sense” celebrate 250 years of US independence like it claims it does as it is not being managed by the federal government or by the official committee responsible for the anniversary celebrations.

In response, Trump’s administration told BBC Sport : “This is an obstructionist, baseless and dilatory lawsuit brought simply to prevent President Trump from hosting what will undoubtedly go down as one of the most historic sporting events in our nation's history during our semi quincentennial celebration.”

The lawsuit accuses Trump of creating the event for his friend and UFC president Dana White: “This is a profoundly corrupt scheme to enrich the president and his friends,” voiced Ballou…

“If this fight is allowed to proceed, it will be only the beginning, and our national monuments will become little more than branding opportunities for the rich and well-connected. We plan to stop that.”
