South Korean international Son Jun-ho arrested in China in connection with a bribery case

South Korean international Son Jun-ho arrested in China in connection with a bribery case

Son was arrested on 12th May which was his 31st birthday. He has 20 international caps and plays domestically for Chinese Super League club Shandong Taishan. The club have not commented but the Chinese foreign ministry have confirmed the detention of Son.

The arrest comes as part of an attempt to crackdown on match-fixing across Chinese football. The president of the Chinese Football Association, Chen Xuyuan, was detained for suspected "serious violations of discipline and the law" and former Everton player and former national coach Li Tie was investigated for “serious violations of the law.”

South Korean football has also experienced match-fixing as the entire executive board of Korea's Football Association resigned after attempting to pardon almost 100 people who had been banned from the sport due to match-fixing and other offences.

The South Korean embassy are attempting to support Son and understand what charges he faces as no details have currently been released.
